Hearing loss is much more common than you might think; 31.5 million people in the US – one out of every nine-have impaired hearing. And because we live in an ever noisier environment, hearing loss is happening much earlier in life than in the past. While one of every eight 50-year-olds is hearing impaired, so is one of every twelve 30-year-olds. In fact, there are more people aged 45 to 64 with a hearing loss than there are people over 65.
The environment we live in – loud workplaces, loud music, loud yard and recreation equipment – accounts for more than a third of lost hearing in Americans. Power tools, lawn mowers, airplanes, and many household appliances are louder than the level considered hazardous in the workplace. Prolonged exposure to these loud noises will cause hearing damage. And it doesn’t take prolonged exposure. A live rock concert is loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage within two to three hours.
